Loughborough [lʌfb (ə) ɹə] is a university and industrial town of about 57,600 inhabitants (2004) in English Leicestershire, about 17 kilometers north of Leicester. The largest employer is the University of Loughborough, a former technical college that is known for its outstanding sports faculty today, but also counts in media and communication studies as well as in library science at the top rated of the British university system. Major industrial enterprises specializing in the construction of electrical appliances and the construction of railway wagons. The market for products from the agricultural environment is great. The area was inhabited in pre-Roman times and had in the 13th century an important wool market. Loughborough is the administrative center of the sub-district Borough of Charnwood.
