Gateshead is a town in Tyne and Wear in the North East of England on the south side of the River Tyne. The city is located opposite of Newcastle upon Tyne and is connected thereto by ten bridges, including the Gateshead Millennium Bridge. It has 78,403 inhabitants (2001) and is the administrative seat of the Metropolitan Borough of Gateshead. Gateshead is located to the MetroCentre one of Europe's largest shopping centers. Also known are the 20-meter-high statue Angel of the North ( "Angel of the North") by Antony Gormley and the concert and event center The Sage Gateshead. Furthermore, located in the city of the Baltic Center for Contemporary Art, where the exhibition of works nominated for the Turner Prize artists took place for the first time outside London 2011th
