Freshwater is a wide-area village and municipality on the west coast of the Isle of Wight, England. Freshwater Bay is a small bay south-east of the village on the western coast of the island, which is also named after a local part of Freshwater. The village is located west in a region that is known as Back of Wight or the West Wight, a popular recreation area. In the year 2011 5.369 inhabitants were counted. The west coast of Freshwater is lined with steep chalk cliffs. In the polymath Robert Hooke was born. Here the court poet Alfred Tennyson, 1st Baron Tennyson lived.
