Edwinstowe is a village in Sherwood Forest, north of the English county of Nottinghamshire. His name means in German as much as "Edwin's resting place". This is due to the fact that the body of the Anglo-Saxon king and Saint Edwin was hidden in the church of the village, after he fell on 12 October 633 at the Battle of Hatfield Chase near Doncaster. According to legend, Robin Hood is said to have married his mistress Maid Marian in the church of St Mary's in Edwinstowe.
