Ecclefechan (Scottish Gaelic Eaglais Fheichein) is a place in the east of Dumfries and Galloway in Scotland and has 821 inhabitants (2011). The village is located on the M74 from England to Scotland and on My Water, a tributary of Annan and is crossed by the B725. Until the English border is 14 kilometers to the nearest village eight kilometers. The village has a hotel. Ecclefechan is the birthplace and final resting place of Thomas Carlyle. The famous philosopher was born in Arched House in the town center. After Carlyle's death he was buried according to his last will to rest in Ecclefechan next to his parents, although a burial in Westminster Abbey was approved.
