Caerleon (Welsh: Caerllion-ar-Wysg) is a village on the banks of the Usk in the north of Newport in Wales, a suburb of Newport. The site contains parts of the University of Wales in Newport and has about 7000 inhabitants. Until the 19th century, when in Newport shipyards had their boom, Caerleon was an important port on Usk with its own shipyard on the right bank, west of the present-day bridge. She presented also the border navigability for sailing ships on the river. The bridges were at the ancient Roman via praetoria until after the collapse of a bridge in 1772 by a devastating storm carried a new building elsewhere.
