Bishop Auckland is a city in County Durham in northeast England. It is located 19 km northwest of Darlington on the River Wear. Bishop Auckland has 24,392 inhabitants (2001) .Bishop Auckland was the seat of the Bishop of Durham, so the city got its first name part. The first mention of the place dates back to 1020, as Cnut the Great Bishop Auckland gave the Bishop of Durham.
