Ashington

Ashington is a town in Northumberland, England, with 27,900 inhabitants. Although the first recorded mention of a settlement in this place under the name Essende from the year 1170, the city developed only in the 1840s, when William John Cavendish Scott Bentinck, 5th Duke of Portland, began to settle workers who should work in his recently opened mine. Since 1988, no more coal is mined here. Ashington is located about 7 km east of Morpeth and about 23 km north of Newcastle upon Tyne.
