It lies on the navigable up to this point for small seagoing vessels Dnepr and has about 2.85 million inhabitants in the metropolitan area, the agglomeration comprises more than 4 million inhabitants. Kiev is an important educational and industrial center and also forms the main transport hub of the country. Because of its historical significance as a center of Kievan Rus, the city often is nicknamed mother of all Russian cities. Because of the many churches and monasteries and its significance for the Orthodox Christianity Kiev is also called the Jerusalem of the East since the Middle Ages. Smirnova at the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory discovered asteroid (2171) Kiev was named after the city.
