Murten (French Morat, the Swiss-German dialect local [mʊːrtə, moːrtə];? Franco-Mora / i) is a municipality in of the Lake District in the Swiss canton Friborg (French District du Lac.). Murten to include the previously independent municipalities Altavilla (incorporated 1991), castle (1975), Büchslen (2013), Courlevon, Jeuss, Lurtigen and Salvenach (all 2016). Murten is the regional cultural and economic center of the northern part of the canton. The medieval Zähringer town with a curtain wall from the 13th to 17th century and a historic city of national significance is the eponymous Murten and was the site of the Battle of Murten.
