Slovakia (? Slovak Slovensko / i), officially Slovakia (Slovak: Slovenská republika / i?), Is a landlocked country in Central Europe, bordered by Austria, the Czech Republic, Poland, Ukraine and Hungary. The capital and largest city in the country is Bratislava. The territory of Slovakia was settled by the Slavs at the turning point of the 5th and 6th century. Their first political entity was the realm of Samo (7th century), and later was in Slovakia one of the centers of early medieval Mährerreiches. In the 11th century Slovakia became part of the Kingdom of Hungary, which was from 1526 part of the Habsburg Monarchy and from 1867 part of Austria-Hungary. After the dissolution of the Dual Monarchy in 1918, Slovakia was part of Czechoslovakia again created, except during the period between 1939 until 1945, when the Slovak state existed. After the end of World War II, the Czechoslovak state was restored. On January 1, 1993 after peaceful breakdown of this state formation was the independent Slovak Republic as a national state of the Slovaks. Since 2004, Slovakia joined the European Union and NATO. In 2007, according to the Schengen Agreement border controls were lifted to EU countries in 2009, Slovakia joined the euro zone. The country is a democratically constituted parliamentary Republik.Mit Poland, Czech Republic and Hungary, Slovakia is the Visegrad Group. On the Human Development Index Slovakia occupies the 37th place in the highly developed countries.
