The Philippines (officially the Republic of the Philippines, filipino Republika ng Pilipinas [ˌpɪlɪpinɐs], English Republic of the Philippines) are a state and archipelago of 7,107 islands in the western Pacific Ocean and part of Southeast Asia. They are the fifth largest island state in the world (after Indonesia, Madagascar, Papua New Guinea and Japan). With 101 million inhabitants, the Philippines is the twelfth largest in terms of population country in the world. The Philippines is next to East Timor (Timor-Leste) is the only Asian country with a Catholic majority. They were named by explorer Ruy López de Villalobos named the islands in honor of the Spanish Infante Philip Las Islas Filipinas.
