Niger

Niger (German [niːgɐ], French Click to Listen please! [Niʒɛːʁ]), long form Republic of Niger, is a landlocked country in West Africa. The eponymous Niger River flows through the relatively densely populated southwest of the desert state. Niger is bordered to the north by Algeria and Libya to the west by Mali and Burkina Faso, to the east by Chad and the south by Nigeria and Benin. Niger is a landlocked country with share in the Sahara, the Sahel and Sudan. Niger is one of the poorest countries in the world and took the last place one in the Human Development Index, 2013. The former French colony is independent since the 1960s. After a period of coups and uprisings of the Tuareg Niger itself appears to stabilize politically. Threatening existence for most of the Nigerien population is regularly recurring droughts and famines at too rapid population growth due to lack of birth control.
