Makarora is a small community in the Queenstown-Lakes District Otago Region in the South Island of New Zealand. The place is very isolated directly on the southeast side of the mountainous Mount Aspiring National Park. The State Highway 6 runs through the town. The only connected by this road with Makarora Haast villages are 40 km northwest (however, the road link through the mountains is considerably longer and winter partially blocked) and Lake Hawea about 35 km south. The nearest major town is Wanaka, about 45 km south. About 17 km northwest of Makarora is the Haast Pass Highway 6. The town is also located at the Makarora River. Local tourism offers are rides and jetboat rides on the Makarora River. Activities in the surrounding area include fishing, hunting and hiking in the national park. vergrößernInteraktiver image viewer panorama of Makarora on State Highway 6 from
