Namibia (officially: Republic of Namibia; German pronunciation: [Namibia]; English Republic of Namibia) is a country in southern Africa between Angola, Botswana, Zambia, South Africa and the Atlantic Ocean. An up to 100 meters long border demarcation - and the only four-country corner of the earth - with Zimbabwe is controversial. The name of the state derives from the Namib Desert, which occupies the entire coastal area of the country. He was chosen as a neutral name at independence to disadvantage any of the many Namibian peoples. As namesake Namibia Mburumba Kerina applies. The dry landscape was originally from the peoples of the San ( "Bushmen") and settled the Damara. Since about the 14th century Bantu migrated into the country during the Bantu migration. The territory of present-day Namibia was in 1884 a German "reserve" and remained until the end of World War I a German colony. In between 1904 and 1908, the German colonial power hit the uprising of the Herero and Nama down by force. In 1920 the League of Nations Namibia under South African mandate - as a de facto South African colony - which has its own laws, such as that introduced apartheid in Namibia. Namibia gained during the Namibian liberation struggle on 21 March 1990 - with the exception of Walvis Bay and the Penguin Islands, which stood until 1994 under South African control - independence from South Africa. March 21 has since National Day of the country. The capital and largest city of Namibia is Windhoek. The country is a member of the United Nations (UN), the Development Community of Southern Africa (SADC), the Customs Union of Southern Africa (SACU) and the African Union (AU) and the Commonwealth of Nations. Namibia is sparsely populated because of the large area ratio of the Namib Desert. The country has about 2.1 million inhabitants. About half the population lives below the international poverty line. 14.3 percent (2013) of the population suffering from HIV / AIDS. Namibia has a stable parliamentary democracy. The Namibian economy is dominated by agriculture, tourism and mining especially of uranium, gold, silver and base metals.
