Montenegro (Serbokroatisch Црна Гора / Crna Gora [ 't͡sr̩naː' ɡɔra]; albanian Mali i Zi) is a country on the southeastern Adriatic in southeastern Europe. It shares borders with Croatia (25 km), Bosnia and Herzegovina (225 km), Serbia (124.4 km), Kosovo (78.6 km) and Albania (172 km). After Montenegro had been part of Yugoslavia nearly 90 years, it was again independent on 3 June of 2006. The Balkan state with about 625,000 inhabitants and an area of ​​13,812 square kilometers, one of the smaller states of Europe - in terms of area slightly smaller than Schleswig-Holstein. The capital is Podgorica. The main industry is tourism on the Montenegrin coast. Montenegro is a member of the United Nations, WTO, OSCE and Council of Europe. In addition, Montenegro is a candidate country of the European Union and has observer status at NATO.
