Lithuania (Lithuanian Lietuva) is a country in Europe. He is assigned to central or northern Europe. Lithuania is the southernmost of the three Baltic states. It is bordered on the west by the Baltic Sea, sharing borders with Latvia, Belarus, Poland and the Russian Kaliningrad Oblast. From about 1253 to 1795 Lithuania was a Grand Duchy, starting in 1569 as a Polish-Lithuanian Union. With the third partition of Poland in 1795 Lithuania was until 1918 under Russian sovereignty and declared 1918 as the Republic's independence. After the Soviet occupation period (from 1940) it became 1990 again sovereignty. Following EU enlargement in 2004, Lithuania became a member state of the European Union and NATO member. Since 1 January 2015, Lithuania is the 19th member of the euro zone.
