Japan (? Japanese 日本, Nihon / Nippon; listen / i) (official: State Japan 日本国, Nihon-koku / Nippon-koku) is a 6852 islands comprehensive East Asian country in the Pacific, which indirectly to the north by Russia, to the west North Korea and South Korea, bordered to the northwest of China and the southwest of Taiwan and is geographically the fourth largest island nation in the world. De facto capital and largest urban settlement is Tokyo. The formation of the Japanese political system began in the fifth century under the cultural influence of the Chinese Empire. Since the 16th century Japan was in contact with the West, rising since the 19th century as a major power on, acquired colonies such as Korea and Taiwan, participated in two world wars and ruled briefly much of South and Southeast Asia. The Japanese Empire to 1947 was an aligned according to the monarchical principle ajar part of the Prussian model, constitutional monarchy with the Japanese Kaiser as head of state. Thus Japan was among one of the world's last empire. Its aggressive expansion policy in China before and during the Second World War (Pacific War) eventually led to the defeat of the Axis powers in August 1945. Since the 2000s several thousand also migrant workers and asylum seekers from Africa and other Asian countries living in Japan. Most residents are followers of Shintoism and Buddhism. As historically the first industrialized nation in Asia, Japan has a very highly developed economy today and for many years was the world's second largest economic power in the world behind the United States, with which it is allied militarily since 1,952th Japan is a member of the group of seven most industrialized nations of the world and the OECD. Japan takes on the UN Human Development Index, a 17th place of the United Nations adopted by 187 Member States Index.
