called Reggio Calabria [ˌɾɛʤːo kalabɾia], and Reggio Calabria or short Reggio (in ancient Rhegion or Rhegium), is a city on the southern tip of the Italian peninsula and capital of the Metropolitan City of Reggio Calabria. Until 1970, Reggio Calabria capital of the region until it was forced to cede this function to Catanzaro. The regional parliament still has its headquarters in Reggio Calabria. With its 183,035 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2015) it is the largest city in Calabria.
