Potenza is the capital of the southern Italian region of Basilicata and the province of Potenza. The province lying around the capital was known before 1871 Province Basilicata, but was only part of today's Basilicata region. The municipality of Potenza counts 67,122 inhabitants (31 December 2015) to 174 square kilometers. The city itself is 819 meters above sea level on a steep mountain range of the southern Apennines above the valley of the Basento. It is the highest capital of a region in Italy. Potenza is the seat of an archbishop of the Catholic Church and the University of Basilicata.
