Pompei is a town with 25,358 inhabitants (December 31, 2015) in the metropolitan city of Naples. It is located south of Vesuvius on the right bank of the river Sarno, about three kilometers from its mouth in the Gulf of Naples. The neighboring municipalities are Torre Annunziata Boscoreale Castellammare di Stabia, Sant'Antonio Abate, Santa Maria la Carita and Scafati (SA). Particularly well known, the city by the archaeological site of ancient Pompeii, the spilled 79 AD by an eruption of Vesuvius and was rediscovered later. Between downfall of the old city and founding the city area several centuries was uninhabited.
