Matera is a town in the southern Italian region of Basilicata with 60,436 inhabitants (as at 31 December 2015) and capital of the province of Matera. The city is the seat of an archbishop. Matera is known for its old town, the Sassi is a significant part of the cave settlements. The Sassi are since 1993 a UNESCO World Heritage Site. On October 17, 2014 Matera was elected to the Italian "European Capital of Culture 2019".
