Bolzano (Italian Bolzano, Ladin Bulsan or Balsan) is the capital of South Tyrol, an autonomous province in Italy, and as such, the seat of the state government and the Diet. Since 1948, the city is a regional trade fair location, since 1964 episcopal see of the newly created Diocese of Bolzano-Bressanone, since 1998 with the Free University and University City. Bolzano is counted among the major urban centers in the Alps and is due to its biculturalism as an important meeting place between the German and the Italian-speaking cultural and economic space.
