Tehran (Persian تهران Tehrān / teɦrɔːn /) is the capital of Iran and the province of the same name. In the administrative city area almost 14 million people (according to the official census of 2012), in the metropolitan region around 20 million people are estimated. However, official statistics of 2011 is based on only 15.2 million people. As a commercial and industrial city with universities, colleges, libraries and museums Tehran is a major economic, scientific and cultural center and a major transportation hub of the country.
