Westerholt is a municipality and at the same time administrative headquarters of the integrated municipality Holtriem in the district of Wittmund in Lower Saxony. First human settlements are dated to the Neolithic period based on archeological findings. The origin of the church in the center is estimated to be from 1250 to 1270, the first written mention of Westerholt in 1420 is related to the name of the church. In economic terms, the municipality is characterized by small trade, service and craft businesses, tourism and agriculture. Branches of various, larger supermarket chains have been established in recent years. In addition to the primary school, which has a school kindergarten and a special elementary school, there is still a primary and secondary school in the school center.
