Verl Click to listen! [fɛʁl] is a city in the northeast of North Rhine-Westphalia, which is 15 kilometers south of Bielefeld. The approximately 25,000 inhabitants city belongs to the East Westphalian Gütersloh district in the administrative district Detmold. The municipality Verl was formed in 1970 by merging several parts of the five municipalities of the Office Verl. The settlement of the present urban area in the Westphalian Bay was first documented in 1088 in writing. Verl was raised on 1 January 2010 to the middle circle town. Due to the location directly on the Ölbach Verl is often referred to as Ölbachstadt (before the appointment as a city as Ölbachgemeinde). It is well known beyond the region for the Ostwestfalenhalle in the district of Kaunitz. Since 1966 there has been a monthly hobby market, one of the largest animal and flea markets in Germany.
