Langewiesen

Langewiesen

Langewiesen is a country town in the Ilm district in Thuringia. It is located in the valley of the Ilm on the northeast edge of the Thuringian Forest, about two kilometers east of Ilmenau, the largest city in the district. Langewiesen is one of the oldest towns in the area and was granted the city rights in 1855 together with Gehren and Großbreitenbach. If the town had remained relatively small over the centuries, industrialization intensified from 1880 and Langewiesen developed into a small industrial town with numerous factories and small factories (especially in the wood, glass and porcelain industries). Since the political change in 1990 Langewiesen experienced an upswing with interim population growth (suburbanization) and the investment of generous new commercial space. The city benefits in particular from the proximity to Ilmenau and its Technical University, whose campus is located directly on the city limits. Since 1994, the southwestern village of Oehrenstock belongs to Langewiesen.
