Herne is a city in the Ruhr area in North Rhine-Westphalia. The county-level city in Arnsberg is designated as secondary center in the national planning and is a member of the Regional Association of Westphalia-Lippe and regional association Ruhr.Die city in its present borders is the result of several regional reforms through the surrounding communities, including the former city Wanne-Eickel , were incorporated to Herne or merged with this city. In the 1939 census Herne had 96,649 inhabitants. Today Herne belongs with its approximately 154,000 inhabitants of the smaller cities of the country and to Offenbach am Main, the area of second-smallest city in Germany. Therefore Herne has to Munich and Berlin on the highest population density of all cities in Germany. Herne also belongs to the Rhine-Ruhr, the square kilometers covers the largest polycentric conurbation in Germany on an area of about 7,000 with more than 10 million inhabitants along the eponymous rivers Rhine and Ruhr. Earlier Herne was an important mining town. it was aware of the mines Shamrock, Constantin, Mont Cenis and Frederick the Great. In the cityscape, the mining past lives on in some received funding towers. Many Bergmann support associations (NWC) keeping the tradition to this day.
