The university town of Freiberg is a district town and mountain city about the middle of Saxony between Dresden and Chemnitz. It is the administrative center of mittelsachsen formed of 2008. The entire historic center is a listed building. Numerous buildings are selected properties for the intended candidacy for UNESCO World Heritage Ore Mountain Mining Region. Until 1969 the city was marked 800 years by the mining and metallurgical industries. In recent decades a structural change to the high-tech location in the field of semiconductor manufacturing and solar technology takes place, thus Freiberg is part of the Silicon Saxony.
