Bischofswerda (Upper Sorbian Biskopicy) is a district town in the district of Bautzen on the western edge of the Saxon Oberlausitz. It is the seat of the administrative community Bischofswerda. The village name is Middle High German origin and means "waterfront settlement of the bishop." Among locals and Umwohnenden also the unofficial name Schie stand for the city is in use. In folk etymology, this is the notion sliding Bock, a special type wheelbarrows, were transported to the urban market with the previously goods returned. In fact, the name derives from the old but Sorbian place names Přibok (pronounced Pschiebock), who is "on the side (the old road)."
