Ecuador (German and Ecuador; to Kichwa Ecuador Mamallakta Spanish: Rep├║blica del Ecuador) is a republic in northwestern South America between Colombia and Peru and has about 15 million inhabitants. The (in Andenhochland) located 2850 m capital is Quito; the largest city Guayaquil is (called) in the Pacific coastal plain. The country is named after the equatorial line that extends through the territory, whereby the majority of the same is in the southern hemisphere. Belonging to Ecuador Galapagos Islands are located between 928 km (smallest distance) and 1272 km (longest distance) west of the coast in the Pacific.
