Denmark (Danish Danmark [dɛnmɑʀg]) is a country and sovereign state in Northern Europe and a parliamentary monarchy. Denmark is officially called, along with the Faroe Islands, both of which belong geographically to northern Europe and Greenland, which is one of North America, the Kingdom of Denmark. The Kingdom of Denmark is therefore an intercontinental state. The home country, the part between the Scandinavian peninsula and Central Europe, comprises an area of 43,094 square kilometers, of which 23,872 square kilometers attributable to the Jutland peninsula and the rest on islands. Denmark is one of the twelve founding members of the (established on April 4, 1949) NATO and the European Union since January 1, 1973 (or its predecessor EEC) .The autonomous areas Greenland and the Faroe conduct their own flags, have their own official languages and belong to NATO but not the EU. The only land border has Denmark to Germany. In there, former Danish Südschleswig a Danish minority lives. In Denmark, there is a German minority in 1866-1920 Prussian respectively German North Schleswig. German there is a recognized regional minority language under the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages.
