Zhanjiang (Chinese 湛江, Pinyin Zhanjiang, Jyutping Zaam3gong1, veralt. French Fort Bayard) is a prefecture-level city in China's Guangdong province. It is located southwest of the provincial capital of Guangzhou on the coast of the South China Sea near the peninsula Leizhou. Zhanjiang is today with 6,994,832 inhabitants (census 2010), the fourth largest city in the southern Chinese province. It covers an area of ​​12,490 that includes the entire Leizhou Peninsula and some north of it lying areas. Zhanjiang consists of four districts (together 1,360 square kilometers, more or less urban settlement area), three urban districts (Lianjiang, Leizhou and Wuchuan) and two circles.
