Chengdu (Chinese 成都市, Pinyin Chengdu? / I, W.-G. Ch'eng-tu) is the capital of Sichuan province and one of the 15 sub-provincial cities in the country. The Chinese short name is Rong (蓉). The city has about 14 million inhabitants, of which about 5 million in the nine districts and 9 million in the surrounding countryside. Chengdu has become the economic center of western China in addition to Chongqing. In 2006, the city came under China Daily on the fourth place of the most livable cities in China.
