Brest (formerly Brest-Litovsk, Lithuanian Brest '; Belarusian Брэст or Берасьце Bjeraszje; Ukrainian Берестя; Polish Brześć; Russian Брест; Lithuanian Brestas, formerly Lietuvos Brasta) is a Belarusian town on the Western Bug with 309,764 inhabitants (1 January 2009) , It is the regional capital of the Brest Region, the administrative center of the Rajons Brest and the main crossing point of the country to Poland. The city was in 1918 the Contract and namesake of the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk between Germany and Soviet Russia.
